Full Version: The Riftwar Saga by Raymond E. Feist
Harry and Ginny > Make Yourself At Home > General discussion
Poetic
I don't know how many of you have ever read, or have ever even *heard* of this series, but I promise you that outside of Harry Potter and Lord of the Rings, its the best fantasy series you'll ever read biggrin.gif

The story takes place in the fictional Kingdom of the Isles, (among other places). And initially, it follows the exploits of an orphan keep boy named Pug, who during a cermony that is something like the Sorting, is chosen as the apprentice to a magician at the court. The magician took him on, purely out of sympathy, but it is discovered that he *does* have some magical talent. However, try as he might Kulgan (the master magician), can't seem to teach him anything...
Then come the aliens, a race from another world that call themselves Tsuranni. They're a war-like race that have travelled across space by means of a rift. They came to Pug's world seeking metal, which is *extremely* rare on their planet. The armies of the Kingdom attempt to push back the invaders, and thus the Riftwar begins. Later in the war, Pug is captured, and taken to the Tsuranni world, where he finally discovers the root of his magical power, and how to control it....

I don't want to give away more here, but I encourage everyone to read this if you like a good fantasy. The saga encompasses a 4 or 5 book set, and is followed up by two other novels...

*Has* anyone ever read this series? If so, what did you think?

I haven't ever read the series but I've heard of it Poetic, any chance you could post the names of all the books - I might be able to look into it more when I eventually get home for Christmas. The other thing I'm curious about, what kind of technological age is it set in - I think from covers I remember both races look like they have medieval weapons? I might be thinking of a different author's series though.

I'm a fan of Raymond Feist, as well. His main storylines are set in alternate universes, rather than in Earth history. But the setting is feudal, mainly European feudal but with some Dynastic-type Oriental thrown in.

Here's the bibliography:

Faerie Tale ............................................. 1988
Honoured Enemy .......................................... 2001

The two above are independent of the main series. Faerie Tale is more of a horror/fantasy. I haven't read Honoured Enemy yet.

This is the series. If you read them in chronological order as published, they'll make more sense.

I've got the newer version or Magician I think because it is all one book but they are amazing. Are Prince of blood and King's buccaneer part of that series becuase I thought they were separate. ( havent actually read them yet.)

There is also
THE CONCLAVE OF SHADOWS
Talon of the Silver Hawk
King of foxes
Exile's return
...

which isn't finished yet. I'm not sure how long after the other books it is set though.
