Full Version: Creative Writing Workshop

We've spent a while discussing this and thought it would be a good idea to have a creative writing workshop looking at a particular aspect of fiction writing. The workshop will take place once a month and anyone is welcome to join in.

The plan is to post some extracts from a variety of published authors works for discussion in this forum about 10 days before a live chat workshop where we can work on the techniques in question and learn from each other. Then it would be great if people could try their hand at it themselves and post it here for others to review and discuss.

We're all learning in this sort of workshop, so please try and keep comments on people's writing as positive as you can. Positive and constructive criticism is seriously helpful, as is encouragement!

The first workshop will be happening in early December after NaNoWriMo is finished. Date and details to come soon.

Hooray! Good plan to hold off until after NaNoWriMo. Hopefully we'll all have a lot of holiday fun with our writing.

Excellent!

By that time I should be on my way to sunny Florida and my new home, so i might even get to join in on the discussion!

I'm really looking forward to participating. Sounds like a good format -- should be successful.

Are you sure you won't want a bit of a break after NaNoWriMo?

LOL I don't think I'll be diving into doing this on 1st December, but we'll have to do it fairly quickly if we want to squeeze it in before Christmas.

Besides, if I make even less sense than usual, I've got a good excuse!

Always good to have a back-up plan. I'll have to think of one for myself!

I have taken several courses in creative writing and would like to offer s few

suggstions. The first thing we need to do is to get everybody writing. Especially

about characters characterization is perhaps the most iomportant act in writing

for whatever we write it needs to be about characters. In order for characters
not to seem too flat we need to build them a background before we write
anything else about them. I would be happy to offer any suggestions along those lines if it would help.

Thanks Sean smile.gif

We're definitely going to be doing characters as well. Hopefully over the months we'll cover most aspects of writing including a few things specific to genres. It's such a big thing sometimes it's difficult to know where to start with it all.

Wonderful to hear you've done some stuff with characters before - looking forward to finding out all about that.

Things have finally settled down to the point that I might actually get to participate in the writing workshop -- however, anyone else think it might be a good idea to post relevant bits from the chat/workshop to a permanent file (for those of us who might have to miss a session or four)?

I'm looking forward to resuming classes in January, even though that means I'll have less time for reading fan fiction, writing fan fiction, writing in general, reading, etc...
Imogen
I think we should archive them too, Robert. I've been a bit held back because of the single phone line and lack of broadband in the new place. Hopefully that'll be rectified soon and I can start being back online a bit more often and eventually get the workshop off the ground. I've got to settle back into my thesis as well, so January promises to be a very hectic month here as well!
