Harry and Ginny _ The Writers' Well _ Do you write?

Posted by: nome Nov 11 2002, 09:56 PM

I was wondering, so....

I would say a pet novel, myself, with parts of other answers.

I have lots of 'bits' of story, the trouble is none of them fit together when I want them to, leading to the creation of more 'bits' of story...it's kind of annoying. I'm going to end up with several puzzles with one piece missing, or one giant puzzle that's been hammered together and cut up to work.

I always seem to have more stories in my head than I actually have time to write. It's just this jumble of tales I want to tell. The problem comes in the fact that I seem to have a very linear mind and can only work from point A to point B, and unlike a lot of other people can't work on more than one story at the same time.

I'd have a question to add to that as well:

Why do people write?

I think the reasons I write are partly relaxation - it's nice to escape into a bit of fantasy at the end of the day, to get away from responsibilities and have a bit of fun. I also write because I feel compelled to tell a tale and can't rest until I've done it. It never ceases to amaze me when I see a story where there was nothing but a blank page before.

Imogen, I completely agree. It amaxes me every time I write something. A blank piece of paper and a pen have so much potential...
I want to be an author, however before I started writing fanfiction I never really saw it happening. Writing fanfiction has been such a help! Compare my first story to what I'm writing now and, well, let's just say the difference is practically tangible.
I've begun a novel of my own, it's fantasy, no surprise there... I was bored at the computer one day and I found this really nice font, so I was experimenting and I somehow managed to start something incredible that I can't let go of now... The idea just came to life in my head and the more I work on it, the bigger it gets!
In answer to your question, Imogen, I write because it's the only magic I can really do. Magic is alive and real when I sit down to write and I want to show everyone else that as well.

with the influence of people like everyone here, I'm improving so much I'll write something and a few days later look at it and start revising, editing, changing... everytime I read something, the same thing happens. Everything I like gets thought over and almost inevitably changes my stories.

Why do people write?

Because someone told me I could.

I've loads of ideas and I always try to write them down, but it's the annoying fact my ideas always pop up when I've got no paper or a pen at hand *mental note - start to carry jotter and pen everywhere* . I've got a few flying around on paper, but I'm waiting until I completely finish them to post anything online.

Why do I write? Well sometimes I'm just going about life and I all of the sudden get an idea for a story... It just comes up and bites me when I least expect it! Funny thing is it's usally around school... I just have to go somewhere with the idea, or it won't leave me alone and once I've started on the idea I can't stop unless my mind stops opening doors. I write cause I can, it's relaxing and it gives me something to do... I have to be careful that my writing doesn't get me in trouble though... You know how hard it is not to go write when you really want to write but know you have to do homework? It's just painful...

I'm a daydreamer... Always have been, daydreaming is a great time to weave a story together! Needless to say that can get me into trouble as well... Especially if I day dream in class and don't notice how much time has passed.

It's good to pass time with too... I often finnish my work at school early, so I just get out my note book and write some more. Only hard thing is resisting the temptation to get out the notebook before finnishing work... biggrin.gif

notebooks don't work real well for me... I'd rather write in my head than on a page. As well, I don't write a lot at once if I'm on a comp because I can't type properly, but I hold my pencil in such a weird, cramped stlye that my hand starts hurting.

Of course, it's all just excuses. icky-irritating-sassa-frassa procrastination!

Hi.

I'm the resident reader.

Yes, I know. I have written fanfic. I'm writing fanfic (or trying).

I'm an actress. I interpret the written word.

Becky, attempting to sound like Percy

I get plots in my head, but I can't seem put it on paper, or screen if you must.

Posted by: Arwena Nov 22 2002, 06:00 AM

I write but only when I've got a good idea. I have a lot of stories that aren't posted anywhere, but I've got a couple at FF.N.

I write because I love being in charge of people and I get to be in charge of all my characters

ROFLOL! laugh.gif

now, THERE's a conversation topic. What do y'all think of the idea that all writers are really control freaks at heart?

Nome.

Posted by: Julephenia Nov 23 2002, 07:10 AM

Nome, do you know why I've stopped writing and am getting my stories betaed at gt and sq?

Because I've been yelling at my characters to do certain things, and they just WON'T!

It's *VERY* trying.

Becky, hasn't touched her works in weeks, she's so mad Ron and Hermione for not cooperating

Posted by: Yoda Nov 23 2002, 12:57 PM

You know you're really in trouble when the characters form a trade union against you smile.gif . Thankfully that hasn't happened to me so far, but they're starting to object to some of the events that I'm putting them through. I would advised offering bribes to them Becky - seem to be working in mine.

I'm just like my characters, and always skip the parts that are hard, to write the fun ones. We don't have many conflicts. biggrin.gif

Posted by: Elenarda Nov 23 2002, 08:24 PM

Characters are seriously obstinate things. I had real trouble with something I wrote recently (An A&O post-epilogue thing). The characters just weren't co-operating at all, and it took ages to coax them round. You can't just make them do something - you need to spend time persuading them that it's really something they do want to do.

Sometimes even that doean't work though. Then I go back and rework the plot so they'll co-operate.

I hate characters!

laugh.gif yeah, sure, Imogen. We belieeeeeeeeve you.

it's the smile that gives you away. biggrin.gif

Posted by: Julephenia Nov 25 2002, 06:15 AM

Yoda, I've *tried* bribing them (with an excerpt).

They aren't cooperating there, either!

I don't know what to do anymore.

My plot died (hence I *love* that Z over at sq is betaeing... it'll jump start me) - though that might be due to the fact that I've written about TEN papers in the past month... my characters are obstinate.... they fight, then they don't, then they just stare at each other... and then they move to other fanfics.

IT IS NOT FAIR!

Becky, really annoyed at her characters, and they're really not hers anyway.

Posted by: Yoda Nov 25 2002, 07:36 PM

What you need to do is catch them when they think you aren't looking, and force them into a plot before they realise that you're actually using them.

If that fails I suggest a larger bribe. Or, use of a stik.

ooh, suggestion... just do what I do, and poke them with a pointy purple lightsaber! *poke, prod*

Heh, I was working on a novel, put it aside for a new plot bunny had come hopping along. Well, when I got to chapter eight of my new novel, one of my friends (we never were that close) offered to look over my story for me. Well it's been almost a year, they moved, I'm at a new school, and I still don't have it back! 332.gif

But, http://www.fictionpress.com is a great original fiction site!

I write a bit. I've been stuck for a while on a novel I'm working on. It's kind of my imagined sequel to 'The Unprotected Witness' by James Stevenson, but I'm stuck with the plot as of late. wallbash.gif wallbash.gif wallbash.gif

Posted by: Entropy Aug 27 2004, 02:28 AM

I write a lot. A LOT.
Very recently one of my old abandoned family of plot bunnies has started picking on me again. The survivng pieces are now sitting on my desk, begging me to lift their banishment... It's funny, the one story I have decided I will NOT write is the one I know the most about.
Does anyone hate it when their characters start bulying them?

Posted by: Jerry Aug 27 2004, 02:30 AM

That's EXACTLY the problem I'm having. I'm going insane trying to tame them ranting.gif laugh.gif

Posted by: Entropy Aug 27 2004, 02:36 AM

You cannot tame them. You cannot even scare them away. Anytime you think you have it means they are plotting something. All you can do is hold on to your pen and hope they do not hurt you too badly.

Posted by: QuickHare Aug 28 2004, 06:18 PM

I write on request. I pay my characters huge sums of money and get a plot from somewhere in a deserted field somewhere north of Dawlish. Add together with a pinch of salt and bring to the boil.

If I write for my own ends, I tend to write short stories, chronicling scenes from my life. I feel that I can write about what's happening with characters resembling myself and the people around me. By doing this, I can get an outsider's view on my life and see what's happening.

However, many of these short stories don't exist anymore as I don't keep them. I try not to look to the past so I feel I have no need of them.

And sometimes it just doesn't work...

Posted by: Ignotus Aug 29 2004, 02:31 AM

You try not to look in the past? Lucky. Wish I could. I still can't get over the fact that someone stole my story. (Literally! )

Posted by: Ravenwood Mar 3 2006, 06:13 PM

Write? Why yes, I do. Two hundred thousand words and climbing right now, and I can't see the end yet. I can see the end of the story, I know exactly how it will end, but it's all the little things along the way that are going to drive me insane. One day I will be found typing on the wall with a spoon, and babbling about the Plot Bunnies that are eating my brain, I know it.

Anyway, according to Fanfiction.net, this is what I've done so far:
