i guess i'll try to renew this:

there are 10 identical rods. 9 are made of iron, one is made of gold. Each is cut into 10 pieces. The little pieces of iron each weigh 1 pound and the gold pieces each weighs 2 pounds. Useing a scale only once how can you find out which rod is made of gold?

This seems fairly obvious, but will it be the shiny yellow one?

PS: The answer to mine was 'rant', which QH did indeed correctly guess in a PM.

[font=Comic Sans Ms][i][color=#3333FF]I could be wrong, but if you weigh one rod, and it weighs 1 pound, wouldn't any rod of double its weight be the gold ones?

but you can only use the scale one time, if u use it to measure a rod you won't be able to use it again, thus u won't be able to figure it except through luck

OK, I'll assume there's another answer... (Personally, I think if I have one pound of something in my hand, and I pick up something in the hand that is twice as heavy, i would notice the difference.) Hmmm... let me think. Can I put more that one rod on the scale at once?

You can only use the scales once, but I assume to weigh any mass you wanted (including multiple rods). I'd suggest an Archemedes jug to help with density?

If you put all of the peices onto the scale, and take them off one at a time, you can tell how much it weighs by how much less the whole lot weighs, and therefore tell which ones wiegh 2 pounds, and therefore pick out the gold bits, right?

but you can only weigh it once. after that the scale breaks or turns off. One weighing and that's it!!! it's not that easy!!!

How can they be identical rods if they are made up of different component atoms?

lol

here’s a hint:

if you were to pick up any number of rods, think about what the possibilities are for how much it will weigh. Then think of ways to ensure that the amount is definitive, or following a pattern.

if this or any part of the riddle is unclear just reply

so this is kind of like the blind man picking socks from his drawer thing? ... only a little more complicated?
