Harry and Ginny _ The Writers' Well _ The NaNo's progress

Posted by: Elenarda Nov 1 2003, 05:57 PM

I've got off to a decent start, all things considered. I've posted just over 2,600 words and I've got another 2,000 done on the computer ready for posting tomorrow. Having said that, I think my brain is about to start oozing out of my ears, but I'll push on to get the whole 5000 done before I stop.

10% down.

Morale is pretty variable right now. The writing's going well but the imp of dread is telling me that it's rubbish.

How's everyone else's first day gone? Emma looks like she was a total star on her all-nighter!

Whee, I'm awake really biggrin.gif wrote up until 6am entirely caffeine- fuelled, and then did another 1000 or so words today after a few hours sleep smile.gif I'm now over the 5k mark- 5052 words, whoo - and trying not to write more on it when I should be doing other things, like an english essay and revision for a french test. I just hope it doesn't all come crashing down when I'm back at school and have homework every night, eep. I've stopped ish for the night now, and am revising for a couple of tests that I have next week, but if I get enough revision done I might try and sneak up to 6000 before bed wink.gif

I'm afraid I must now claim the award for least words written. Time for the wet noodle -- 191.

But, an interesting-to-write 191. I had a severely angsty day: stuck without plot, characters, or any pleasure at all in writing. Imogen can attest to this. So, this is a step forward.

I'll just have to write extra tomorrow. wink.gif I'd appreciate any comments y'all might have if you find time to take a peek. Kind souls are rewarded with a glimpse of the pear.

Nome, feeling spazzy.

Robert looks like he's storming ahead too. Woohooo! Keep going everyone!

At lunchtime today I hit the 5317 mark, and posted the next update. I'm planning on writing for a few hours this afternoon for another couple of thousand words, before taking a necessary break to mark some exercise books for school!

Hoping to be about halfway through chapter 3 by the end of today...

I have 2,811 - with a lot of padding - and an old kinda report I did in it but I am pretty confident doing stuff like that is the only way I will complete it.

I am also taking an exercise book with me to college - using breaks to scribble bits. ANd plan for further on!

after tring my self to the computer for a couple of streaches today managed to push it to 4051, another day off work tomorrow to work on giving myself some leeway

At this moment I have 2,645 words posted, but in my trusty word document, I have 2,707! Not much of a difference, I know, but I still think it's impressive, lol. Am bringing notebook to school tomorrow, in order to finally make History a bit more productive, lol.
Good luck, all!

5000+ words in and my fic now has a name biggrin.gif

"Thunder & Rainbows" which is also a track by http://www.martynjoseph.co.uk. And hopefully fits what I intend to do to poor Harry this summer.

Posted by: Elenarda Nov 3 2003, 09:18 PM

Just approaching 8500 now. I was tempted to do a bit more tonight, but I've reached a natural stopping place.

I'm actually glad I've got a bit of writing in hand as I've got an open evening to attend tomorrow night and if I have to be there for the whole thing I'll be lucky to get anything written at all! At least I've got the first half of chapter 3 ready to post regardless!

If tomorrow night's not too bad, I'm optimistic about hitting the 10,000 word (20%) mark before bed.

I'm still thinking this is completely insane, but it's a lot of fun too!

How is it going? let's see...

horribly, awfully, badly, terribly, abominably, awkwardly, blunderingly, carelessly, clumsily, crudely, defectively, erroneously, faultily, feeble, haphazardly, imperfectly, incompetently, ineffectively, ineptly, maladroitly, negligently, poorly, shoddily, stupidly, unfavorably, unfortunately, unsatisfactorily, unskillfully, unsuccessfully, weakly, wrongly, dreadfully, agonizingly, arduously, awkwardly, burdensomely, cumbersomely, cumbrously, difficultly, distressingly, exhaustingly, gruelingly, hardly, harshly, inconveniently, laboriously, painfully, ponderously, roughly, strenuously, tiredly, toilsomely, unwieldily, scruffily, shabbily, unhappily...

How many other ways should I say it?

Nome, exhausted, busy, stressed, lacking time, lacking inspiration, and sporting a word count of 1065.

Posted by: Elenarda Nov 4 2003, 07:03 AM

But we're all making progress and that's the important thing. I know there are some insane people at the NaNo site who are probably finished by now, but we're getting there!

Don't worry about the writers' block, Robert. Try some random writing on something else, or ignore it for a couple of days. There was a site JK (Ashavah) gave me the link to once that had some excellent advice on writing. I'll see if I can find it for you.

Keep plugging away! We can do it!

EEK!

I've done a measly 2747 words, but am quite pleased with my progress. I wrote that in about 4 hourse yesterday and about 1/2 an hour today. Didn't do ANY writing on 1st & 2nd, I was too busy.

If I keep going at this rate, I should be able to keep on track. I hope.

Fingers crossed!

6,154 words to date. I switched writing subjects at the last minute and am making up the murder mystery as I go along. "First draft," I keep saying as I fumble through the writing itself. That makes it a lot more bearable!

Got home at 9.30pm last night and managed to type up most of chapter 3 that I'd written during a couple of breaks at work. I've got a bit left to finish from that for tonight's posting, and then I've hit the 10,000 mark.

It feels like a huge milestone!

Imogen smile.gif (who must update her sig)

Posted by: b4zookajules Nov 5 2003, 05:00 PM

Is it seriously the 5th November?? Man. I was so convinced it was the 4th. sad.gif

But still, I'm going pretty well, considering the fact I have literally no plot to work with at all. tongue.gif I worked out my characters' histories, then totally ignored having to plot out the actual story. I was feeling quite confident, but then when I sat down on November 1st I suddenly realised I had no idea what I could write. laugh.gif So, so far I've been winging it, but it's gone quite well. I hit the 10 000 mark last night!! biggrin.gif

I'm completely unmotivated to write anything at all at the moment, but hopefully I'll get back into the groove a bit later. smile.gif

My best tip so far is to just write about totally insane things. If it starts raining, don't just write that it's raining - write the characters' opinion on rain, whether they like or hate it, and possibly have it remind them of something that happened in the rain in their past. It sounds silly, but it's really topped up my count. I had about 1-200 words about rain yesterday, and its lovely habit of turning up whenever you've not got an umbrella, then buggering off if you're completely prepared. tongue.gif

My biggest problem at the moment, though, is how awkward my characters are with each other. It's not such a bad thing because it's how they're meant to be, but halfway through my third chapter and I have no idea how I'm going to break the ice. tongue.gif Any tips?

Good luck all!! smile.gif I fully intend to read everyone's novel, but for the moment I really have no time to. Hopefully I'll get the time soon smile.gif

I've had a disasterous end to the week where I've got virtually nothing written. It wasn't even procrastination for a change, just a lot of late nights at work for either me or the hubby and I've been far too tired to write.

I'm on the very edge of making the 50,000 words by the end of the month if I keep up this pace, so really I need to speed up a bit in case things go wrong like they did last week.

Today's wordcount stands at a mere 573. In my defense, I finally got my marking assistant to courier back the parts of the midterms he graded so I'm collating tests, recording grades and getting it all together instead of getting to play. Back to the marking so I can hopefully bump up my wordcount later (though when it comes to editing time in December I am going to throw out most of chapter three -- blech!).

I had a bad day yesterday as well. I managed 1200 words before I fell asleep (hence the lack of posting), so I'm going to have to catch up a lot tonight.

Shimmer~at work, no time to write, oh god. ermm.gif

Posted by: nome Nov 13 2003, 06:19 AM

It's kind of sad when I'm very happy to be a procrastinator.

I've been reasonably busy for the past while, but I HAVE had enough time to write. I just don't. I don't know if it's disinterest, lack of motivation, distraction with the writing I desperately want to do on my other work, or depression and the fact that deep in my gut I know I'm not going to even come close to finishing, but I just haven't done anything.

So I count it as procrastination, and I'm starting to think of it in the manner 'if I don't do it, the month will end and it will be too late'.

*reads what she just wrote* shoot. sorry for dumping. ignore my angsty, introspective whinging.

Y'all are doing so well! I'm so proud of all of you. I hope you're having fun!

Anybody got a dorf man yet?

Posted by: Elenarda Nov 13 2003, 07:25 AM

Yeah, you're right. As long as I do a fair bit every weekend I should be ok - especially as there are three weekends left before NaNo finishes. I can write 8000 words in a weekend, so realistically, even if I don't write at all during the week I'd come very close to finishing.

It's not unachievable... or I hope it's not... ARGH!

bart
[Theres life outside of NaNoWriMo? Where? Where? Show me!, Show Me!]

Posted by: Elenarda Nov 16 2003, 05:48 PM

I'm having a lot of problems right now - mostly because I'm trying to pack the house up for the move and it's not leaving enough time for the writing I've got to do. I wanted to get 2 chapters written this weekend, and I've not quite finished chapter 6 yet. It'll be done before bed and I'll be just past the 25,000 mark.

I can see two options: I either blaze through the remaining words in a week or so, or I stop until we've actually relocated and take the same time that remains in NaNo and finish it off then.

It's a tough call, but I think I'm going to have to take a break now. Mostly because moving house is never fun anyway, but it's twice as difficult with 3 small kids (including one with autism!) We're off in less than 3 weeks and I'm nowhere near getting anything organised. The books are packed, but that's about it...

wallbash.gif wallbash.gif wallbash.gif

No final decision yet. Maybe I'll just have an insane week of writing?

Imogen smile.gif

Although, I'm feeling really ill at the moment... too ill to sleep, in fact. I'm not going to be able to sleep for a while, so I've set myself a ridiculous NaNo target (40k by the end of the day XP) and am not going on the internet from 3am-whenever I'm finished.

Hee, wish me luck. ^_^

Posted by: Shimmer Nov 24 2003, 12:57 AM

I have decided that with all the stress going on in my life right now and the fact that starting tomorrow, it's only going to intensify, that I am not going to worry about completing this in November. I'll try, like Imogen, for the end of december. I'm proud of myself for having written as much as I did (22,000!), but theres just too much to write and not enough time. It's not giving up really, just getting to the finish line a bit behind everyone else.
Good Luck All!

You can do it Bart! Keep it going!!

My goal for the end of the month is 30,000 words...

Thanks for your support Imogen, you know I think I just might do it as well biggrin.gif

And todays two chapters have certainly helped, I've now pushed on past 40,000 words and am in the home stretch you have no idea how much easier it looks when you have less than 10,000 words left to go, because I know i can churn out 4000-5000 on the last day if I have too, luckily its a day off as well.

Have begun Very Cunning Plan ™

I can't admit defeat on this! I absolutely canNOT miss this deadline, so I'm rattling out the basic plot for the rest of the chapters as fast as I can go. There's going to be no prizes for Literature on this version laugh.gif BUT (and this is the all important but) I should make the deadline with a hastily scribbled rest of plot.

It does mean that the chapters should go up pretty quickly in December, because all I'll need to do is rewrite them so they're readable for you and have all the emotions and such in that I want. Then I can start the proper rewrite in January. The proper version looks as if it'll be about 70,000 anyway, so there's no harm in waffling it out 20,000 words of sketchy story that I can use as a framework for stuff to be posted here.

So, here we go... I'm currently 33,000 words on file and pounding the keyboard.

Imogen wink.gif

Posted by: bart Nov 28 2003, 09:44 PM

now on 44,363 and after tomorrow night I should be where I want to be going in to my final day, which is thankfully a day off and gives be most of the day to blast out the last 4000ish words.

Keep going Bart! You're nearly there!!!

I've just crossed the 40,000 word barrier this morning (the writing is truly terrible; honestly you don't even want to see how bad this is!) and I've set aside the rest of the day for gabbling through the remainder of the plot.

LOL I must learn to give up on projects. This is just insane...

Still, at least it means I get to wear the t-shirt wink.gif

LOLOL. If you're extremely good I'll get chapter 7 posted for you all tonight. That chapter's not so bad - it just needs a bit of brushing up. It all goes horribly downhill from there!

I'll make them slightly more paletable before I post them, right now it's not much beyond the basic plot, but it's all words, words, words...

FOFLOL I can't believe I made it to 50,000 words like that. My padded plot notes did the trick and I've the structure of what really needs to be written up typed out and finished!

I'm laughing so hard - it's been an insane few days but it's FANTASTIC to hit the end of it. I know I'm heading back to draft chapter 8 now and I've just posted chapter 7, so the work is a long way from being finished.

Well it looks like I'm going to have to give up on the attempt to reach 50,000 words, I'm just too far behind, and the lack of oppertunity for writing over the next week isn't going to help.

I fully intend to finish the story though, if only to stop Drie killing me over the current cliffhanger! biggrin.gif, but I'm going to put my efforts into whipping it into some sort of shape.

Keep going mbwun5 - just repeat the 'Back to the Future' mantra - 'If you put your mind to it, you can accomplish anything!'

Speaking of using your mind - Chapter 4: Nightmares - is now written and being posted to fp.com.

The rating is going up to PG-13 now as well, to be on the safe side. It's more like a 12/12A I would say, but that rating's not available to me.
