Harry and Ginny _ Procrastination Station _ Riddle me this

Posted by: Drie Dec 27 2003, 01:35 AM

Okay, I know a lot of boards have a riddle thread. I thought it may be fun to have one here. I'll start with a riddle that many may know . . . feel free to post your answer below, or add a new one!

A man is lying dead on the ground. Next to him is a rock. The man's death is because of the rock, but he did not get hit with the rock, nor did he trip over the rock. Who is the man, how did he die, and what kind of rock is it?

Feel free to ask questions, and good luck! wink.gif

Posted by: Willow Dec 27 2003, 11:41 AM

Drie! you're supposed to start off as an easy one! sad.gif

i for one have no idea...yet...but im working on it

QUOTE
The poor have lots of it. The rich don't. Eating it will kill you. What is it?

One rule to add to this thread as I have seen similar things spoilt on other sites

Only the poster of the Riddle may say whether your answer is correct or not and then pass the baton on to you so please wait for them to post/congratulate you etc etc should that someone not pop in for a day or two only then start a new clue

This one's more of a brain-teaser puzzle than a classic riddle:

You must use a gold chain to pay a worker for seven days of service.
The chain has seven links on it, and you agree on a price of one link per day.

However, the worker will not work without getting the day's pay up front,
and you do not wish to give him more than his due for the fear that he will
take it and leave. Therefore, you realised that you must cut some of the links on the chain.

What is the smallest number of links you will need to cut, so that you can
make sure that the worker receives one link for every day that he works, but not more?

Posted by: hockeygod Jan 9 2004, 07:06 PM

Posted by: RJOCL12 Jan 9 2004, 08:28 PM

five cuts will give you seven individual links

Robert thumbup1.gif thumbup1.gif

Posted by: hockeygod Jan 9 2004, 08:31 PM

can i change my guess to six cuts?

Posted by: Roxanne Jan 10 2004, 04:39 AM

Always trust your first instinct, hockeygod! 1 is correct.

You cut link #3 and separate it from the others, thereby leaving you with a 2-link piece, 1 (cut) link, and a 4-link piece.

Day 1 - give the single link
Day 2 - take the single link back, give the 2-link piece
Day 3 - give the single link back to add to the 2-link piece, leaving the worker with 3 links
Day 4 - take the 3 links back, and give the 4-link piece
Day 5 - give the single link to add to the 4-link piece
Day 6 - take the single link back, and give the 2-link piece to add with the 4-links
Day 7 - give the single link back - worker now has all 7

blink.gif

Take it away, hockeygod!

Five hundred begins it, five hundred ends it,
Five in the middle is seen;
First of all figures, the first of all letters,
Take up their stations between.
Join all together, and then you will bring
Before you the name of an eminent king.

if it was Bilbo asking, it would indeed be Gollum's PRECIOUSSSS, the one ring, so Willow, you probably got it.

if Robert's asking as himself, since he does the pizza delivery thing in MB, I'd say one or more of keys, change, pizza crumbs and/or sand! cool.gif

Thanks for letting me off the hook, Hershey!

Sorry, Willow! I only googled for it after my first guesses were posted by others and proven to be wrong. I'll just go with my own guesses from now on, promise! blushing.gif

I'll do an easy one to make up for it:

We are little airy creatures
All of different voice and features
One of us in "glass" is set
One of us you'll find in "jet"
T'other you may see in "tin"
And the fourth a "box" within
If the fifth you should pursue
It can never fly from "you"

What are the five "little airy creatures"?

This is an unusual paragraph. How quickly can you find out
what is so uncommon about it? It looks so ordinary that
you may think nothing is odd about it until you match it
with most paragraphs this long. If you put your mind to
it and study it, you will find out, but nobody may assist
you; do it without any coaching. Go to work and try your
skill at figuring it out.

(Sorry it took so long to post blushing.gif )

Posted by: Roxanne Jan 17 2004, 04:49 PM

Is it that there's no letter "e" in the whole paragraph? I know there's some other letters missing as well (like x and z) but e is the most-often occurring letter in the English alphabet. unsure.gif

The first number is 1

The following number, uses two digits to describe the previous

ie, there was one number one (11)
the next would be decribed as two ones (21)
the next one two and one one (1211)

one one, one three, two ones, three twos, and one one (1113213211)

Posted by: hockeygod Jan 24 2004, 01:41 AM

could it be hate?
