A quick google search will reveal lots of information about Nicolas Flamel. Not a great surprise that two authors would choose to use him, as probably the name most associated with alchemy. Having said that, it IS surprising that JKR should use the name of a genuine historical character. I can't think of any other examples in the HP lexicon, except for Merlin of course? Definately intriguing!
