Characters are seriously obstinate things. I had real trouble with something I wrote recently (An A&O post-epilogue thing). The characters just weren't co-operating at all, and it took ages to coax them round. You can't just make them do something - you need to spend time persuading them that it's really something they do want to do.
Sometimes even that doean't work though. Then I go back and rework the plot so they'll co-operate.
I hate characters!

Being in Slytherin, she’d thought it had been the epitome of cool to return to school with such useful snakey phrases as “Can you pass the apple pie, please?” and “Would you be good enough to tell me what time the train to Madrid departs from Platform Two?” . ~ A Pensieve Affair ~ Now being posted...

Heh, I was working on a novel, put it aside for a new plot bunny had come hopping along. Well, when I got to chapter eight of my new novel, one of my friends (we never were that close) offered to look over my story for me. Well it's been almost a year, they moved, I'm at a new school, and I still don't have it back! But, Fictionpress is a great original fiction site!

Is that David Bowie?” “Never mind that, look!” the American exchange student exclaimed. “I found the Triwizard cup! It’s mine! All mine! I’ll finally get the fame and glory and honor I deserve!” “Stupefy,” said Harry. The American exchange student dropped to the ground, stunned. “Woah!” Cedric exclaimed in astonishment. “You can do magic?!” “Come on, Cedric,” Harry sighed. “We’d better take this together. You know, so Draco Malfoy won’t think I’m selfish. I really want to get with him, you know.” -- Silver Phoenix, Harry Potter and the Omelette of Desire Rabbits Have Rights!

That's EXACTLY the problem I'm having. I'm going insane trying to tame them

I write on request. I pay my characters huge sums of money and get a plot from somewhere in a deserted field somewhere north of Dawlish. Add together with a pinch of salt and bring to the boil.
If I write for my own ends, I tend to write short stories, chronicling scenes from my life. I feel that I can write about what's happening with characters resembling myself and the people around me. By doing this, I can get an outsider's view on my life and see what's happening.
However, many of these short stories don't exist anymore as I don't keep them. I try not to look to the past so I feel I have no need of them.
And sometimes it just doesn't work...

Write? Why yes, I do. Two hundred thousand words and climbing right now, and I can't see the end yet. I can see the end of the story, I know exactly how it will end, but it's all the little things along the way that are going to drive me insane. One day I will be found typing on the wall with a spoon, and babbling about the Plot Bunnies that are eating my brain, I know it.
Anyway, according to Fanfiction.net, this is what I've done so far:
