Characters are seriously obstinate things. I had real trouble with something I wrote recently (An A&O post-epilogue thing). The characters just weren't co-operating at all, and it took ages to coax them round. You can't just make them do something - you need to spend time persuading them that it's really something they do want to do.
Sometimes even that doean't work though. Then I go back and rework the plot so they'll co-operate.
I hate characters!
