Okay, I know a lot of boards have a riddle thread. I thought it may be fun to have one here. I'll start with a riddle that many may know . . . feel free to post your answer below, or add a new one!
A man is lying dead on the ground. Next to him is a rock. The man's death is because of the rock, but he did not get hit with the rock, nor did he trip over the rock. Who is the man, how did he die, and what kind of rock is it?
Feel free to ask questions, and good luck!
Drie! you're supposed to start off as an easy one!
i for one have no idea...yet...but im working on it
I agree with Willow. Can you give us a hint?
kidney stone?
CCC
Rock Climber/Fell Off/Tall One ?

Is it nothing?
And thanks for the added rules -- will definately help the thread!

I'll guarantee it, after spending all day thinking about it, it better be nothing or I shall thwack someone.
CCC

Riddles just arent my thing! i would have never got that
Ok...and the next riddle is.....
A man was found murdered on Sunday morning. His wife immediately called the police. The police questioned the wife and staff and got these alibis: The Wife said she was sleeping. The Cook was cooking breakfast. The Gardener was picking vegetables. The Maid was getting the mail. The Butler was cleaning the closet. The police instantly arrested the murderer. Who did it and how did they know?
Happy Riddling!
Waas it thheee erm..... Butler?
If you tell me why you think it's the bulter then I'll tell you if you're right!
The maid cuz there is no post on Sundays!!!
Very good job tying in Harry, DL.
hockeygod is right...and I didn't really notice that I tied Harry in there, but hey, who am I to complain!
ok, time for another riddle...
Who makes it, has no need of it.
Who buys it, has no use for it.
Who uses it can neither see nor feel it.
its a coffin!
yes, yes it is. good job DL. now yoiu get to come up with another one.
It goes up, but at the same time goes down.
Up toward the sky, and down toward the ground.
It's present tense and past tense too,
come for a ride, just me and you.
Have fun!
is it a roller coaster?

Children like it...now keep guessing

The maid did it. There is no mail delivery on Sunday.
Robert
Robert, did you miss a whole string of posts? I already got that and we are now on DL's second riddle.
It's a see-saw (but I had to Google to find the answer - is that cheating?)
Roxanne
Nah...you got it roxanne!
Good job!!
hockeygod, it wasn't that hard was it?
I knew as soon as I saw the answer that I would kick myself, and kick myself I did.
Yea, actually I did. I acidentally went back two pages of posts instead of one
OOPs!
Robert
Just popping in to say I love this thread. Eagerly waiting the next one!
Imogen
Okay, here's the next riddle:
What English word can have 4 of its 5 letters removed and still retain its original pronunciation?
(There are two possible answers to this one that I know of, though one is debatable as to whether it's a proper word. Extra brownie points if you get both answers!)
Roxanne
This is a hard one Roxanne!!
Any clues?
I know! I know!
bart
who is is going to let others have a go first, though if you want a clue you will have to get in line and wait like everybody else.

i am such a fool. i didn't even get bart's clue.
roxanne...what's the other word?
Well, Clinton actually answered it, but Bart posted first, so I'll let the two of you settle on who gets to ask the next riddle.
The other word (which is questionable as to whether it's a proper word) is "aitch", which if you leave off the "aitc" leaves you with "h"
Roxanne
Why is it that the only time i get an anser to a riddle i get kicked off the computer and when i come back i find i have the right anser and everyones got it!
Ah well...i await the next riddle
I'll let clinton have the honours on this one
OK to keep this going the first to post gets the honours of setting the next riddle
Okay, someone post the next riddle this is fun even thought I don't get half of them.
Ok, here's another riddle.
I am, in truth, a yellow fork
From tables in the sky
By inadvertent fingers dropped
The awful cutlery.
Of mansions never quite disclosed
And never quite concealed
The apparatus of the dark
To ignorance revealed.
Good Luck!!!
hockeygod beat me to it...now I actually have to think!
is it lightning?
Yeah DL, it's lightning. Now you get to give us the next riddle.
score...anyways...
Mr. and Mrs. Brown have six daughters and each daughter has one brother. How many people are in the Brown family?
Easy, I know
would the answer be no one?
Sorry...I wrote it wrong
If ti was how many were in the Brown family, then it is 9
Yea...told you it was easy...now if I could just learn how to type...
Sweet, I got one. Next riddle, here it is...
My love, when I gaze on thy beautiful face,
Careering along, yet always in place --
The thought has often come into my mind
If I ever shall see thy glorious behind.
Good Luck!!!
i have been notified that this riddle is really hard. i tell you to read the last line and then read the whole thing. it might make more sense.

Only one color, but not one size,
Stuck at the bottom, yet easily flies.
Present in sun, but not in rain,
Doing no harm, and feeling no pain.

now who wants to do the next riddle?
she can have it if she wants it
I'm sometimes white,
Although sometimes I'm black.
I take you there,
But never bring you back. What am I?
I guess my riddle is pretty tough.
I. Am. Completely. Clueless.
Good riddle!
Hint-Transportation

your up Smanda
the more you take away the larger this gets. What is it?
a hole?
Roxanne
i was gonna say a i hole aswell, but roxanne got their before me!
is it a hole?
Yeah a hole is the answer. Roxanne got it. Sorry it took so long for me to realize it.
This one's more of a brain-teaser puzzle than a classic riddle:
You must use a gold chain to pay a worker for seven days of service.
The chain has seven links on it, and you agree on a price of one link per day.
However, the worker will not work without getting the day's pay up front,
and you do not wish to give him more than his due for the fear that he will
take it and leave. Therefore, you realised that you must cut some of the links on the chain.
What is the smallest number of links you will need to cut, so that you can
make sure that the worker receives one link for every day that he works, but not more?
Roxanne
erm...i wild guess.... 3
this is my wild guess...1.
good puzzle
five cuts will give you seven individual links
Robert
can i change my guess to six cuts?
Always trust your first instinct, hockeygod! 1 is correct.
You cut link #3 and separate it from the others, thereby leaving you with a 2-link piece, 1 (cut) link, and a 4-link piece.
Day 1 - give the single link
Day 2 - take the single link back, give the 2-link piece
Day 3 - give the single link back to add to the 2-link piece, leaving the worker with 3 links
Day 4 - take the 3 links back, and give the 4-link piece
Day 5 - give the single link to add to the 4-link piece
Day 6 - take the single link back, and give the 2-link piece to add with the 4-links
Day 7 - give the single link back - worker now has all 7
Take it away, hockeygod!
Roxanne
Ok, here's the next riddle. Good luck!!!
Five hundred begins it, five hundred ends it,
Five in the middle is seen;
First of all figures, the first of all letters,
Take up their stations between.
Join all together, and then you will bring
Before you the name of an eminent king.
Ladies and Gentlemen, Elvis has left the building!
I dont understand that.....
is it Elvis? I have no clue. That is a tough one.
No, it's not Elvis, but if two more people can't get it, I will give a clue, that I think will help a great deal, but it might not since I already know the answer.
oooo...is it David?
I love roman numerals!
Yeah, DL got it. The answer is David. Ok, DL, we await the riddle you are going to give us.
Whoever makes it, tells it not.
Whoever takes it, knows it not.
And whoever knows it wants it not.
Have fun!
is it poison?
all the ansers the these are on a website thats easy to find

Squeeze it and it cries tears as red as its flesh,
but its heart is made of stone.
is it a cherry?
Yes, it is a cherry. Go ahead DL, give us another riddle.
What occurs once in a minute, twice in a moment and never in a thousand years?
is it love?
nope...keep guessing
'tis the letter 'M'
*narrows eyes at Bart* i knew that!

Shhot, now I feel stupid cuz I put love.
It may be the high frequency of Hilary Duff's voice messing with your brain
And the next riddle is...
A farmer and his hired help were carrying grain to the barn. The farmer carried one sack of grain and the hired help carried two sacks. Who carried the heavier load and why?
The farmer. He carried a SACK of grain while the helper carried two EMPTY sacks.
Robert
Show Off!
your turn Robert!
Bart
MMMMM! What is in my pocket?
Robert
Is that supposed to be a lame attempt at a riddle? lol i guess nuffin
Hint - Tolken
Tolken? Is that supposed to be a subtle hint cos im geting no vibes from that word!
Yup!
Is this even allowed....whats in my pocket!
Tolken is that the hint where u spelt the word wrong and it was meant to be tolkein...or token....
Ok Ok so I can't spell. Beauregard was playing with the keyboard.
Hint-TOLKEIN
All the Bilbo fans should get it.
Robert
the hobbit?
Close. Now what is in my pocket?
A ring?
Maybe, I'll check back and see who's right later tonight.
Robert
lint?
Your hand?
if it was Bilbo asking, it would indeed be Gollum's PRECIOUSSSS, the one ring, so Willow, you probably got it.
if Robert's asking as himself, since he does the pizza delivery thing in MB, I'd say one or more of keys, change, pizza crumbs and/or sand!
Roxanne
Good guesses Roxanne but you're right that Jennie wins this one.
The answer is the ring.
Robert
( I waited to post so that Jennie would go and do her homework)
My life can be measured in hours.
I serve by being devoured.
Thin, I am quick.
Fat, I am slow.

Jennie (still hasnt done homework sorry robert although i did history!)
a candle?
Yeh hershey got it in one
Yeah!! I've been waiting to guess one right because I had a good riddle to share.
What costs nothing, but is worth everything
Weighs nothing, but lasts a lifetime
That one person can't own, but two people can share?
Love?
yeh what bart said! you always seem to get there one step ahead of me!
Aww, that's sweet, but could it be a deep-seated hatred as well?
way to be optomistic there...ill let you slide on account of midterms/finals though...they bring out the worst in people...stupid midterms
well, it could have been hate, but it's probably not.
Love is closer than hate, but neither are correct.
Joy or Happiness?
Robdert
Sorry Robdert, but no.
IT HAS TO BE LOVE! hershey what else can it be? give us a clue?
I confess I had to Google for this one, since I guessed "love," too -
is it friendship?

Jennie, when are you going to learn? You tattle to two people Imogen and Professor Snape! next time, do it right.
Professer Snape thinks im a tiresome child. Tattling to him would mean i got told off for that too! you live to get me in trouble!
Wheres hershey! i want to know if Roxanne got the answer....cos i cant think!
Roxanne got it. It was tough and love could be the answer, but not when I heard it so I think the Google is permitted.
Your turn Rox.
~H~
Thanks for letting me off the hook, Hershey!
Sorry, Willow! I only googled for it after my first guesses were posted by others and proven to be wrong. I'll just go with my own guesses from now on, promise!
I'll do an easy one to make up for it:
We are little airy creatures
All of different voice and features
One of us in "glass" is set
One of us you'll find in "jet"
T'other you may see in "tin"
And the fourth a "box" within
If the fifth you should pursue
It can never fly from "you"
What are the five "little airy creatures"?
Roxanne, who promises to reserve her googles for extreme measures!
the vowels...aeiou?
Hey, DL, I've seen this one. You got it. Go ahead and post a new one.
yes, I know it's easy but...
What do you throw out when you want to use it, but take in when you don't want to use it?
a ball?
Oh! An anchor?
It took me ages to think of this! it was not easy! am i right?
Jennie got it!
oo yeh! I didnt even google or anything am soo proud lol
Right next riddle....
In middle of the desert, there's a little wooden hut.
Theres nothing on the walls, just a hook on the ceiling, and a man has hung himself from a piece of rope. There's a puddle of water on the floor.
How did he reach the hook to hang himself?
He stood on a block of ice and then the ice melted
aw poo! it took me ages to work out that when i first heard it!
Go on Della take it away....
A man rides in to town on Friday, stays two days, and leaves on Friday. How does he do this?

Sorry! Im just in a riddle mood hehe. I have one!

A brick, a puddle of water and shards of broken glass are
on the floor. Alan and Mary are lying dead.
Why?

yeeeeeh!
Della i thought you would have got that....I said they werent human!

This is an unusual paragraph. How quickly can you find out
what is so uncommon about it? It looks so ordinary that
you may think nothing is odd about it until you match it
with most paragraphs this long. If you put your mind to
it and study it, you will find out, but nobody may assist
you; do it without any coaching. Go to work and try your
skill at figuring it out.
(Sorry it took so long to post )
Is it that there's no letter "e" in the whole paragraph? I know there's some other letters missing as well (like x and z) but e is the most-often occurring letter in the English alphabet.
Roxanne
Wow, even if that is wrong, I would have never thought to see the missing e's.
I think Roxanne is right with that one, it was what I was going to say anyway but lets wait for Della to confirm it.
bart
Della is officially confirming it.
Take it away roxanne!
Woohoo!
This is an old one, but maybe y'all haven't seen it before -

Quite correct Robert Your turn.
Yea!!! I'll have to come up with a good one so I'll have one later tonight.
Come on Robert! Give me your worst hardest riddle! I'll get it!
Yeah, what's taking so long?
Sorry for the delay, but for those impatient teens on the site, I do occassionally have to show up for work.
A cowboy rides into town on Friday
He stays for three nights
and leaves on Friday
How is that possible?
The name of whatever he rode in on is Friday?
Am i having a seriouscase of de-ja-vu (dunno how to spell) or has that riddle been posted before?

Roxanne, you win!
Robert
Just remember Jennie, the PEN IS MIGHTIER THAN THE SWORD!
Okay, next riddle:
It cannot be seen, cannot be felt,
Cannot be heard, cannot be smelt.
It lies behind stars and under hills,
And empty holes it fills.
It comes first and follows after,
Ends life, kills laughter.
is it death?
But you can smell death can't you? Or is that just a metaphore?
Nope, not death.
could it be hate?
Not hate, either.
If it helps, I can say that to me, the answer completely fits the first four lines of the riddle, but I find a bit to argue with in the last two lines. And it's not an emotion or a state of being, although it can be used to describe either of those things.
darkness
~Entropy
That's it! Tag, you're up, Entropy
*grumbles after reading all of the riddles* You people used all the ones I can remember, so here's one that's more of a puzzle.
A convict is sentenced to death. He must choose to enter one of three rooms. The floor of the first erupts into flames every three minutes. The second holds lions who haven't eaten for three years. The third holds an assasin with a rifle.
Which room would be safest for him, and why?
The one with the assasin because he doesn't have any ammunition?
No. You're thinking too hard.
The one with the dead lions?
(having not eaten for three years, most things would be)
Yup. Your turn.
Ahhh, shoot. I overthought it. Come on Bart, post a new riddle.
(I know, it's 11:39 in England. Still no excuse.)
Yeah come on bart 11:39 isn't too late. But now it is 11:45 AM in England and you should be awake and posting even if you are at work.
Ok!, Ok! Sheesh!
Two fathers and two sons went fishing one day. They were there the whole day and only caught 3 fish. One father said, that is enough for all of us , we will have one each.
How can this be possible?
It's only 3 men total - a grandfather, father, and son (2 fathers, 2 sons)
Argh!
Too easy, obviously...
Your up Roxanne
bart
Yes, that was quite easy. I could've gotten it if I wasn't reading fanfiction all morning and making my parents a surprise welcome home linner (lunch and dinner, my own word.)
Awww, finally one I get and I'm at school.
Okay, next up:
What has cities with no houses, rivers without water, and forests without trees?
A Map?
We're going to have to find a source for harder riddles, Bart! You got it.
Woah! that was just a guess
OK I need for being remis in the posting of this...
I don't have eyes,
But once I did see.
Once I had thoughts,
But now I'm empty.
What am I?
A snakeskin (or something like that)
Yoda, hunting the basilisk
Nope!
bart (confusing the little green one)
Mmmm, a skull?
correct!
Okay:
A woman shoots her husband.
Then she holds him under water for over 5 minutes.
Finally, she hangs him.
But 5 minutes later they both go out together and enjoy a wonderful dinner together.
How can this be?
She's taking, exposing and drying a photograph of her husband before going out to dinner.
Either that, or he's cloned.
Yoda, rooting for the clone option
You got it oh Jedi Master! (The photograph answer, not a clone . . . though her husband may be Boba Fett . . .)
Your turn!
Alive without breath,
As cold as death,
Never thirsty, ever drinking,
All in mail, never clinking.
Okay, obvious if you know it - but avoid looking up!
Yoda, 'borrowing' a riddle from a genius (not implying that bart is said genius of course)
fisssssh, my precious...
hm. riddle, riddle, riddle. Okay... "What kind of cheese is made backwards?"
Edam! Edam, precious, it is!
Now, nasty hobbitses guessed our wordses so we must think up new ones, let's think precious...
It cannot be seen, cannot be felt,
Cannot be heard, cannot be smelt.
It lies behind stars and under hills,
And empty holes it fills.
It comes first and follows after,
Ends life, kills laughter.
Whats they thinking now, precious, what's they thinking?
Darkness, perhaps.
I'll wait for an answer before giving the next riddle.
yep, the darkness, how we loves it precious, back to our caveses now
By any chance has the Jedi Master, who has lived for 300yrs as the most knowledgable warrior who uses the Force, is now a small, weary old hobbit who likes nothing more than to pig out in front of the TV with raw fish and a golden ring (also known as a Hula Hoop)?
I hope not. Otherwise New Line Cinema and Twentieth Century Fox have some copyright issues to sort out.
What is the Ultimate Answer to Life, the Universe, and Everything?

Mmmm...chocolate
Me? You had the right answer first Della Luna. Its your turn my dear.

ok...next riddle
After teaching his class all about roman numerals (X = 10, IX=9 and so on) the teacher asked his class to draw a single continuous line and turn IX into 6. The only stipulation the teacher made was that the pen could not be lifted from the paper until the line was complete. How can this be done?

When I was searching for this riddle I got a 'Riddle's School of Dark Arts' and a song by Nsync...
This isn't very good to explain in words, so here is a nice diagram:

The other way of course is to realise that the teacher had finished talking about Roman Numerals and draw a single line forming an " S " before the IX
