Harry and Ginny _ Procrastination Station _ Celebdaq

Posted by: Elenarda Apr 17 2004, 08:35 PM

http://www.bbc.co.uk/celebdaq/ is a stock exchange trading game, based on how many newspaper column inches celebrities gain each week. You buy and sell shares in any celebs you want with the aim of making an obscene profit!

We used to play this on GT and I've started up a league for anyone here who fancies playing for a while - The Elenardians! Let me know your user NUMBER on this thread and I can add you to the league!

I'm off to spend £10,000 on shares!

I-mogen smile.gif

And your user ID number...

Posted by: bart Apr 17 2004, 08:53 PM

and thats me in, anybody who remembers the GT league should be quaking in there virtual boots right now.....

Ha ha! I've got to gloat because this is probably the only week I'll ever beat you!

GOOOOOOOOOOOOOO David Beckham! I'm over £20,000 already. Mind you I had *no* idea who to buy for this week. Ended up getting shares in Michael Jackson bag.gif

Posted by: Yoda Apr 28 2004, 07:45 AM

pah! I fear not the vaguely intimidating mumblings of ~He Who Lives Dangerously~!

I think the number you want for me is 2980985, if this doesn't work then I'll go and find another one at some point!

Added you, Yoda. And where did all your money come from? sly.gif

Posted by: Yoda Apr 30 2004, 09:27 AM

*blinks* I have money? *blinks a few more times then goes and checks* aaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaahok, that money. Ahem *attempts not to look shifty. fails*

I think it's because that's my old account, I never stopped it when I managed to delete myself from the original gt league, but just kept changing targets every week. I believe the money there came from RotK cast, the OotP release and Matrix Trilogy cast members.

And for anyone noticing a theme, yep - I am continuing to just buy people from films or worthy contenders elsewhere e.g. JKR and...well, that's about it.

On the flip side, I bought loads of shares in the celeb that's doing the best in my portfolio. Does this mean I get a very good chance of staying close to the top next week?

It'll be better than the time I collected a £20 note (About $34 or €30) in a collecting tin while supporting the charity I help out with (the RNLI - Shameless plug, but it works! All I need now is the advert for the site http://www.rnli-exeter.org.uk which I designed and wrote myself!)

Posted by: Tim Jun 3 2004, 02:33 PM

Yes the invisible man is my normal nom de net so to speak, that was already used here so I abbreviated it to Tim.

As for good shares I have a fair chunk in Audley Harrison, I noticed him over the weekend, low price means a change of a few pennys in a big percentage swing. Unfortunately this is being balanced by Britney Spears drop, hopefully I'll get a decent div on her though. This might be awful advice though since I'm being beaten by many people.

In my defence, I will say that it didn't help that I sold a fair few good people, fearing the worst, seeing red and clicking like mad on the button "Sell All".
I have righted my wrong, though, and now have a good chance of gaining higher than Yoda. But I have also picked on "easy targets" as I won't be around next week to check on them. I'll be busy with some final thingies. I don't know what they are, but they sound important. I have to go into a room with many other people and write a bit in silence. Easy.

Something has clearly gone wrong with my plans...I'm 3rd!

Yoda, losing money is more difficult than it looks (I'm not a student any more or it'd be no problem)

It's that day again. The weekend is coming, the weather's nice and someone's about to leave the Big Brother UK house. Elsewhere in life, Celebdaq has just paid out dividends. Therefore, it is perfect timing for the Elenardian leaderboard. Here it is:
QUOTE (Celebdaq)
1 (1)    thenome (3717954)                  1144150 +170.36%
2 (2)    alienmarmalade (3708778)        1044886 +59.07%
3 (4)    QuickHare (3715213)                 1020359 +56.73%
4 (6)    Hershey13 (3716303)                    37967 +4.21%
5 (7)    MathGeek (3715480)                     42558 +3.63%
6 (8)    the invisible man (3323784)       8010000 +0.00%
7 (3)    gtyoda (2980985)                     2350030 -1.79%
8 (5)    bart_154ce (3708783)               1992338 -5.14%

Those interested to know will notice that Yoda is plummeting, and is lower than Tim (the invisible man), who has yet to buy any shares yet. Therefore, Yoda invested wisely and lost his money as expected.
Nome is on top. Well done, but I'm rising through the ranks to hopefully overtake both Imogen and Nome in a week or two.
Bart did badly. Real bad. Will Rooney save him this time? Probably not.
Finally, Hershey and HG have gone up in the world thanks to Yoda and Bart's demise. They make sure Yoda stays near the bottom.
I think I've mentioned everyone. If I haven't, you're on the board somewhere!

Yoda's not going to be very happy, being 4th. However, Imogen will be glad to hear she has remained on the top spot for the last two weeks now. And Tim still hasn't brought any shares...

Posted by: Yoda Aug 10 2004, 11:41 AM

Nope, Yoda's not very happy at all, in fact he's a bit ranting.gif to see I'm (now) in 5th place, which is way to high - let's see if this weeks wise investment will plummet me to the usual rank. In the meantime, I really must give Tim a call - I owe him £10 as well which I'm sure he's anxious to get off me!

Yoda, in debt yet not a student...odd

Posted by: QuickHare Aug 10 2004, 05:49 PM

Yoda, there's too many ex-students who are in debt... to me.

Invest badly, and I hope to see you on the bottom very soon. I'm not being horrible, just wishing you luck on getting to last place, where you want to be. I might join you for fun soon. I'll reach another million first.

9 (9)    MathGeek (3715480)                  42137 -4.79%

It seems Imogen is the top again for the third week running. What shares has she got? Myself am following up the rear (no sniggering in the back!). Then Yoda. Tut, tut. He tried so hard to invest badly, he's actually risen in the table. He now stands at third place. Bart's there just being Bart. I bet he thought I wouldn't notice our newest member, helenllama. Not being told anything of this, I assume this is DL in disguise. Pretty good for just starting. Invest all you money to get great returns. And as a tip, do what Yoda's doing. I wouldn't usually say that! Hershey doing not so well, but at least she brought shares, unlike Tim, who still sits in 8th. When was the last time he logged on to the internet? This time the only person who lost money was HG, who sits at the bottom making surethe rest of the names don't fall off the table. How nice.

Now I'm off for a pint. Anyone coming?

Aww, please Mr. QH? I like the bottom spot.

Posted by: Yoda Aug 18 2004, 04:51 PM

My spot! *snarls at HG* Bad Shares! *snarls at my shares* Why don't they plummet anymore? Meh, will content myself with getting to a million quickly and losing all my money because of this. And I really must give Tim a bell. Unless he's still in the middle of Dartmoor (where he was when he hadn't taken out the money I owed him from my account and so, despite my ranting.gif ing could not actually cash the cheque). Hmm, long explanation there.

Yoda, off to shout at his shares

Well maybe if my famous people woul do something I'd move up.

Posted by: QuickHare Aug 18 2004, 07:13 PM

Email Yoda and find out from him. Maybe if you both swapped celebs, you'd be high up and Yoda would be closer the bottom. But wait til Friday as you won't gain much beforehand.

Posted by: hockeygod Aug 18 2004, 07:16 PM

I could do that or I could stay in last place.

Posted by: Yoda Aug 18 2004, 10:18 PM

Stay in last place - it rules (we so need a 'rock on!' emoticon at this point!). If you want to consistently stay there, go for a movie star, they only tend to go up for two days before plummeting every time. That's why my place fluctuates a lot, because I don't always juggle the celebs I have all the time!

Yoda, we so need a juggling emoticon at this point! teehee.gif

Well, good news - I've managed to contact Tim (despite his best attempts to live up to his claim of invisibility). He's in a similar situation to the one I was in last year - where my internet connection was none too reliable - so hasn't been able to get a link to Celebdaq for long enough to buy any shares. He'll be back on more even terms with the rest of us come October, that said he still has a 5 million lead on any one of us!

Posted by: QuickHare Aug 31 2004, 02:32 PM

I have not ben near a computer all weekend, so I don't know what the standings are/were. I'm sure there is a simple reason why HG was lost. I think it might be he clicked on "Remove me from this league" at some point...

Posted by: hockeygod Aug 31 2004, 02:34 PM

No, I was dropped completely from Celebdaq. I had to completely re-register.

Posted by: QuickHare Aug 31 2004, 02:54 PM

Could it have been long inactivity on your account (ie you haven't signed in for ages)? Could it be you used your login elsewhere on BBCi and they threw you off? Could it be that the BBC just made a mistake? No-one knows... I will look into it, though.

Posted by: hockeygod Aug 31 2004, 02:57 PM

I'm almost positive it was inactivity. Anyways I re-registered and I am back in the game. I just need to get back in the league.

Posted by: QuickHare Aug 31 2004, 02:58 PM

Looks like it. Rules state:

QUOTE (Celebdaq rules)
In the fast-paced world of the celebrity stock market, you may lose money on your shares if you don't keep on top of the game, but if your account remains inactive for a set period of time, it will be deleted.

Traders whose accounts remain inactive for 30 days will receive a warning in their weekly email that their account will be deleted after a further 30 days if they don't continue to play the game.

This is to clear the game of unused accounts.

N.B. If traders opt to receive no mail from Celebdaq, they will not receive this warning.

So can the one in charge of the League add 3774067 to it? Ta.

hmm, from -5% to +38% in 4 days - not bad, if I say so myself. I will be buzzing Tim this week, now he's back at Exeter, to see if he'll decide to earn more and shame us all by leaping to 10 million in two weeks. Yes, I have seen him leap 2 million in two weeks.

Posted by: Yoda Oct 22 2004, 11:12 AM

Well, it's not exactly that I was late in posting last week's standings, I just posted them to the wrong place. The wrong place just happened to be nowhere in particular, but anyway - currents results:

QUOTE (The 'Daq )
1 (2)    Hershey13 (3716303)  1558380 +58.32%
2 (3)    bart_154ce (3708783)    496486 +40.96%
3 (1)    alienmarmalade (3708778)    192852 +33.66%
4 (5)    gtyoda (2980985)    22236 +32.44%
5 (4)    QuickHare (3715213)    349146 +20.65%
6 (6)    helenllama (3768164)    23169 +5.65%
7 (7)    MathGeek (3774067)    10670 +1.54%
8 (8)    the invisible man (3323784)    10000 +0.00%

Despite constant attempts I have been unable to raise Tim at uni, suspect he may have changed his mobile number of is in lecture hell. Probably the latter. That aside, the only majorly noticeable event is that hershey is on 1.5million and hasn't been pounced upon by the 'daq spenders to present her with a nice icon. That's 500000 up the tube when they do - unfair!

QUOTE ( 'Daq High Command)
Statement to shareholders regarding site closure

The site has been closed to allow us to upgrade some systems across both 'daq sites (Sportdaq and Celebdaq).

This closure means that the sites will be closed for trading from mid-morning on Monday 25 October 2004 with the service returning once the work has been completed. Given the complex nature of the work being undertaken we are not able to specify how long this will take, although we expect the site to re-open on Tuesday morning. Should this not be the case users will be notified through a further statement.

We would like to thank all users for their patience and understanding while we undertake this essential work.

ranting.gif ranting.gif ranting.gif All my shares are plummeting again!!!!!!

yoda, it's a conspiracy I tell you - a conspiracy!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Posted by: QuickHare Oct 31 2004, 05:14 PM

Due to a change in the servers at the BBCi website, users need to confirm their details before trading. This is for security reasons and to add extra information. Users need not update, but cannot use the service fully if they don't, such as trading.

Someone's dropped off the list as well. It happens if an account is inactive for 30(?) days. Give a yell if it's you and I'll add you back on.

But have you noticed... I'm top this week with 135% increase! (Watch it plummet during NaNoWriMo!)

Mrs Elenarda, that would be Tim (theinvisibleman) as he has not been near a computer for ages. When he gets back into the swing of things, his number is 3323784.

And I've just looked at my shares. I should rise through the ranks soon, but not much...!

Please step forward helenllama, MathGeek, the invisible man. You need to sign in to Celebdaq to carry on your rankings, though I fear the current scores have been wiped.

Can I ask if anyone wishes for me to cary on posting the leader board, as many people are not really that bothered? Or am I wrong?

Posted by: Elenarda Nov 19 2004, 06:01 PM

I'm checking. It was my own fault this week. Madonna plummeted so I had to sell her last night. A real bummer with the divis.

can i join the league? my number is 3810379

Posted by: Helen Dec 19 2004, 02:12 PM

Sorry. Forgot about Celebdaq once I went to uni.

Will my user ID still be the same or do I have to reregister?

Just asking coz trying to reactivate my account and it is not letting me sign in.

Helen

Firstly, the username is case sensitive. Secondly, the site underwent some revamping recently. I think unused accounts were all deactivated and removed after a long period of inactivity. You may have to re-register.

Can you please add me back on. I have reactivated my account and am currently buying some shares. User ID 3812621

Nice to see the league filling up again - but note my sudden fall from grace. Isn't it amazing how quickly everyone can turn against you? laugh.gif
